A Touch of New England Charm |
A wonderful combination of New England fishing village charm and Midwestern friendliness, Port Washington welcomes you. We are 30 miles north of Milwaukee, on the shore of Lake Michigan. Nestled among seven hills, this picturesque city has much to offer.
Port Washington began as "Wisconsin City" in 1835, and was incorporated in 1848, the same year that Wisconsin became a state. In 1867, the harbor was dug, the first man-made harbor in North America.
Port Washington is fortunate in having an intact and economically viable historic downtown, recently named to the National Register of Historic Places. It has the largest collection of pre-Civil War buildings in the state. The downtown is lake level, and adjacent to the marina. Visit our many specialty shops, including antique and craft shops. There is a microbrewery in town that you can tour; its products are available at many local establishments. Try any of our great restaurants; the cuisine ranges from gourmet to sandwiches, but casual attire is welcome at all.
