BAYFIELD HISTORY

From the arrival of the Anishanabe (Ojibwe) on Madeline Island to the boom years of big lumber and commercial fishing, history has left its mark on the Bayfield Peninsula. The Madeline Island Historical Museum revisits the lives and art of the early Native American settlers, fishermen, loggers, trappers and missionaries, a tradition that comes alive yearly during Red Cliff Cultural Days, which celebrates the Ojibwe life with story telling, dancing, and drumming.

History lives in the architecture of Bayfield as well. A walking tour of the Carnegie Library, High School, First National Bank and Catholic Church, all built of Bayfield Brownstone, takes a visitor back to the heady years between 1883, when the railroad arrived, and 1924, when the lumber mill closed its doors. Many stately houses of the era now operate as bed-and-breakfast inns, treating guests to the atmosphere of turnof- the-century life in Bayfield.

In those day commercial fishing sustained Bayfield, a tradition that began in 1856, with the American Fur Company’s shipment of salted fish in barrels to eastern markets, and continues on a much more modest scale today. Now the old fish tugs are outnumbered by sleek pleasure craft, but it’s easy to imagine the Bayfield of schooners and steamships, especially when admiring the classic wooden boats that dot the harbor.
